"Flat Millies" Reporting from Poland and Germany

Click Read More to hear from two of our Global Studies "Flat Millies" Katie and Liza on their excursion in Germany and Poland. The "girls" are a take on Flat Stanley, a 1964 children's book written by Jeff Brown, where the main character was accidentally flattened. One perk of his altered state was that he was able to visit his friends by being mailed in an envelope. Our Grade 2 students are enjoying their updates from adventures afar.

By Katie and Liza:

Hello Grade 2's,
We landed in Warsaw, Poland today just after lunch time! It took 7.5 hours to fly here. We were able to get some sleep on the plane.  You will notice I am wearing the SMLS Rugby shirt along with all of the SS3 girls. We want to make sure we travel safely as a group. It makes it so easy to find everyone in our group. After we checked into our hotel, I went for a walk with the SS3 girls to the "old town". The old town is very beautiful as you will see from the photo. Poland is in the centre of Europe and is a very important country. Tomorrow we will celebrate Independence Day with the Polish people. This is the day Poland gained independence as a country. It is similar to Canada Day. The Polish flag is also white and red! We will take the Eurocity Express train to Berlin, Germany tomorrow afternoon. We will spend 3 days in Germany learning about the history and the culture!

Last night we all woke up during the middle of the night because of the time change. Did you know Poland is 6 hours ahead of Oakville? This morning our day began with a delicious European breakfast buffet! Breakfast looks very different here in Poland. Cereals, eggs, sausages, sauerkraut, cold cuts, cheeses, salads, yoghurt, assortment of breads and juices. After breakfast we did lots of walking in downtown Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. For lunch we enjoyed the national dish of Poland....Periogie! Some of us had Cheese Pierogie and some had Russian Pierogie (potato and cheese). They were delicious! After lunch we made our way to the Warsaw train station. We took a very fast train from Warsaw to Berlin, Germany, another country in Europe. It took 5.5 hours. It was a very cool train because it had compartments that held 6 people!

Today we went on a tour of the Reichstag Building. It is a very impressive building as you can see from the photo! It is the German Parliamentary building! It is over 120 years old. We had a guided tour of the Reichstag and we got to sit in the Plenary Hall where we learned how the members of parliKatie and Lizaament (MP's) work together to run the country. We did lots and lots of walking around the city today, to learn as much about Berlin as we could. We stopped at other important historical sights including the Berlin Wall, the Berliner Dome (a beautiful cathedral) and a Christmas market where we bought some treats! Tomorrow afternoon we will take a 7 hour bus ride to the city of Krackow, Poland, where they have a castle!
