Overview of Features

Our Higher Education & University Guidance program begins in Grade 8 and carries on throughout the Senior School years. We support each girl in identifying her areas of interest, potential post-secondary institutions, and countries that meet her personal goals. SMLS has a sequence of experiences for girls as they move through the grades toward their goal of higher education and beyond. Below is a brief overview of some of the features you can expect for your daughter.

Students leave SMLS well equipped to embark on their higher education pathway and the next stages of their life journey.

List of 3 items.

  • Grade 8

Grade 8 girls explore the diverse range of opportunities and possibilities beyond secondary school. The kick-off event in this phase is working with CareerGirls.org, a video-based career exploration tool with over 7,000 video clips featuring more than 400 women role models. These successful women work in different careers—ranging from astronaut to musician to veterinarian—across North America.
  • Grades 9 & 10

Grade 9 girls engage in extensive self-assessments of their own interests and aptitudes. Grade 10 students do a full assessment of all of the possible opportunities available to them based on their self assessment results, asking questions such as, ‘What can I do with the skills and interests I have?’ aligned with the Grade 10 Civics course.  An annual Speed Mentoring Event brings girls together with SMLS alumnae from a diverse range of careers.
  • Grades 11 & 12

Grade 11 and 12 girls receive support and guidance on specific post-secondary/university programs and scholarships, the application and interview process, and thriving at university. Mock interviews provide students with the opportunity to experience an interview or audition with SMLS teachers and staff to help them prepare for the challenging interviews in which they will participate. Students also participate in Grad Seminars where they learn about the transition to university from recent SMLS alumnae.
